Bigbank to become the first bank to adopt the more secure Smart ID+ authentication protocol
In June 2026, Bigbank will become the first universal bank in Estonia to introduce the new and more secure Smart ID+ authentication solution when providing banking services.
According to Arthur Taavet, Head of Bigbank Estonia, ensuring customer security is currently one of the bank’s top priorities. “On the one hand, every individual must be exceptionally vigilant themselves, but as a bank we also want to do everything possible to ensure that our customers’ savings are well protected,” Taavet emphasizes.
From a regular user’s perspective, the biggest difference between Smart ID+ and the old system is that users no longer need to enter their personal identification code on a website or compare verification codes. “The new solution, which requires scanning a QR code, may take some getting used to for people who use e-services infrequently. However, it is also used in public e-services, so most people already have some initial experience with it,” explains Arthur Taavet. According to him, the Riigi Infosüsteemide Amet introduced Smart ID+ in public e-services a few months ago. Because login can only be initiated from the user’s own device with the new solution, it is nearly impossible for fraudsters to initiate logins remotely on someone’s behalf.
Taavet notes that tens of thousands of people have opened accounts with Bigbank over the past year. “As a rapidly growing and developing bank, our goal is to always stay one step ahead. When it comes to security, it is even more important to be a step ahead not just of other banks, but of those who seek to take what does not belong to them,” he stresses.
